1) Joseph has 48 comic books. He sold one-fourth of his collection
to his friend. He brought twice the number of comic books as he has
now. How many comic books does he have now?
2. In the library, there are 9 rectangular tables with 8 pupils each
and square tables with 4 pupils each. How many square tables are
needed so that 100 pupils can read at the same time?

1. Let J represents Joseph

Originally, J has 48 comic books but he sold ¼ of it.

J= 48÷ 4 = 12

So he sold 12 of it. He brought twice the number of comic books as he has now.

J = 48 – 12 = 36

J = 36 + (36×2)

J = 36 + 72

J = 108

Answer: Joseph has 108 comic books now.

2. Let P represent the pupils

There are 100 P in all. There are 9 rectangular tables with 8 pupils each and square tables with 4 pupils each.

Given: 9 rectangular tables with 8 pupils each

So, 9 × 8 = 72

72 pupils can fit 9 rectangular tables.

How many square tables are needed so that 100 P can read at the same time?

So, there are already 72 students can fit 9 rectangular tables.

100 – 72 = 28 students

28 students ÷ 4 = 7

Answer: 7 square tables are needed.
