Why is it that in several instances of crisis, the nation finds healing in the songs of Jamie Rivera? Is it the song or the singer?
Jamie Rivera sings the way she speaks. Her voice is soft and effortless. She also lends clarity to each note that it’s virtually impossible to misunderstand her life and music’s message, mainly about love and faith. “Love, for me, is God, that’s the root,” she stresses. “Love comes from God. Love should be selfless, because it should be shared with everybody.”
From teenage troubadour of sentimental pop to internationally recognized “Heal Our Land,” she has become known as “diva for the divine.” Rivera claims that while she may not be political, she has an appreciation for the impact of “Heal Our Land.”
, `Singing is praying twice.’ Since singing is praying twice, Filipinos, they like singing, and if they sing that song, (it’s like) they’ve been praying,” she marvels. “Imagine all those people praying in All I did was sing with my heart, but that one voice was able to convince a lot of people to sing with us. In that way, I’m sure na pinakinggan tayo ni Lord.”
It’s only now that Jamie’s career keeps getting mentioned in the same breath as her spirituality. But unlike politics, it has always been an integral part of her life, especially now that she’s a wife and mother to seven-year-old Reine. “Even as a child, my faith was there. Hindi naman talaga nagbago, it was only strengthened, not only through my songs but also through my family,” she adds. “You have to practice what you want to instill in your children. Kung dalaga ka, carefree ka when it comes to your faith. For example, if you put a knife on the table, in the past, I’ll just let it be. Pakialam ko kung sino’ng matusok d’yan. Now that I’m a mother, I see a you have to be careful and set an example not only to your family, but to everybody.”
Rivera’s pop craftsmanship, honed both as hit maker and composer of commercial jingles, makes her effective as God’s messenger. She describes her songs as wholesome and easy to sing along with. “I don’t really go for very deep music and lyrics. I want to reach a lot of people,” she says. riting evokes. Consequently, her vocal style is a departure from the traditional belting that typifies most female artists on the local scene. When Jamie sings, she also tells a story.
“I wrote `Maybe’ by the Neocolours for their lead singer, Ito Rapadas,” she recalls. “He was courting someone who had a boyfriend. He was so insecure, but we knew that the girl liked him. I wrote the song for him to help him with the girl.” Similarly, “Awit Para Sa lyo” was a result of the singer’s own expression of infatuation with a guy. Jamie notes with a girlish laugh that she did have to play it safe because she had a different boyfriend at the time. Now her foray into Christmas carols, like with “Christmas Will Always Be Christmas,” seems to reflect the growing insight and social concern that had come with age. She observes how the celebration of the season remains unchanged through a child’s eyes. The thought of children always seems to come up in conversations. Part of the ” she says.
The simplicity of Jamie’s sound, such that kids have easily picked up on the for the meeting. At the start of 2002, since the recording of the song, from the MTV and then on, I didn’t release any other single. I concentrated on that song and we went from different churches and Catholic schools to another to promote the song and also, the event.”
According to her long-time personal manager Ming Tirana, Rivera is the consummate professional. “Jamie is very punctual,” she discloses. “When it comes to her work, lahat in order. She’s very organized. Very vocal siya kung ano’ng gusto niya at ayaw niya. She’s very honest.” True enough, despite her apparent good nature, Rivera is wary of people who often take It’s not true. I have my temper; I get mad, I get upset and angry. Some people also take advantage, that’s the hard part,” she notes. “Since I’m doing a lot of church tours, they forget that it’s also my job. This is my source of livelihood, too.”
Rivera’s combination of innate musical gift and work ethic ensures her growth as an artist with her own brand of daring. After triumphant stints in Miss Saigon in London and Bugis Street in Singapore, Jamie reveals that she still hopes to maximize her potential on stage. For now, however, her adventurous streak is most apparent in raising Reine. “I am not only a mother to my child, but also a friend. We even go rock-climbing. My husband is not the type who’d teach her how to ride the bike. He’s very protective of our daughter, since she’s an only child,” Jamie quips.
The mother-daughter secret is only theirs for the time being. Soon, Jamie just might end up singing about it.
