Effects Of La Niña And El Niño

Effects of la niña and el niño

El Niño and La Niña are two extreme climate phenomena that can bring devastating effects to lives and the environment itself. Let’s discuss them one by one.

El Niño means “little boy child” in Latin. This is a phenomena described with extreme heat and low precipitation. Its effects are:

  • Drought. El Niño brings about drought which can damage plantations on the places that it wreaks havoc to.
  • Wildfires. Extreme temperatures dry up grasses and can ultimately cause wildfires. This can burn down several hectares of forest in just a few days.
  • Health Concerns. Extreme heat can cause dehydration not only to plants but also to humans and animals. Animals and humans can suffer heat stroke when conditions are dire and water is not available.

La Niña means “little girl child” in Latin. This is described as the extended periods of heavy rains and storms. This consequences of this are the following:

  • Flooding. Continuous rains for days can fill dams and thus water needs to be released. This can flood the low-lying areas near the dam. The same applies to cities with poor drainage systems.
  • Landslides. Continuous rains can soften the slopes, causing it to erode and eventually destroy a portion of the mountain.
  • Health Concerns. Flooding can cause health alerts for diseases like leptospirosis due to poor drainage system where rats can reside. The bacteria that causes leptospirosis comes from the urine of rats.
