Systematic Curriculum Mapping
- While it is certainly possible for a single teacher to draw up a curriculum map for the subject and grade that they teach, curriculum mapping is more successful when it comes to a system-wide process. In other
words, the curriculum of the whole school system will be mapped to ensure continuity of education. This systemic approach to curriculum mapping will require cooperation among all educators who train students within the school.
- Improved horizontal, vertical, subject area and interdisciplinary coherence are the key advantages of comprehensive curriculum mapping:
• Horizontal coherence: the program is horizontally consistent because it is equivalent to the program with the same class, course or grade point. For example, learning outcomes for a 10th grade algebra class at a public school in Tennessee are horizontally compatible when compared with learning outcomes for a 10th grade algebra class at a public school in Maine.
- Vertical coherence: Instruction is vertically coherent when logically sequential. In other words, one lecture, course, or grade prepares students for what they will learn in the next lecture, class, or grade.
- Subject area coherence: Curriculum is consistent across the subject area, where students receive equal instruction and study the same subjects across the subject area. For example, if one school has three separate teachers who teach 9th grade biology, learning results should be equivalent in-class, regardless of the instructor.
- Interdisciplinary coherence: Curriculum is cohesive in an interdisciplinary context when teachers from different subject areas (such as math, English, science, and history) work together to develop the primary crosscurricular skills that students need to achieve in all grades and subjects. Examples include reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
